What is Gestalt?

Translated from German, the word ‘Gestalt’ implies ‘wholeness’, and as a verb, ‘to make whole’.

Gestalt psychotherapy provides a space for a holistic exploration of the client’s experience in the moment, authentic living, and human relating.

Gestalt psychotherapy has a ‘here and now’ focus on the clients’ awareness of their world and relationships with others. Simultaneously, Gestalt psychotherapy is sensitive to a person’s whole life experience, the physical, psychological, intellectual, emotional, interpersonal and spiritual and that each of these interconnected aspects of living is considered inseparable from the client’s environment, history and culture.

Gestalt psychotherapy promotes self-awareness and holds that therapeutic change occurs through an authentic meeting with another with a focus on describing and understanding the unique experience of client’s rather than interpreting and generalizing about their experience. Gestalt psychotherapy also offers a delicate balance of support and challenge in addressing the hopes and dreams of clients.

Gestalt psychotherapy offers the opportunity for a healing experience through a meeting and a dialogue between the client and the therapist and is grounded in the ideas of phenomenology (awareness and subjectivity), field theory (context), dialogic existentialism (relationship), contact (process), holism (connectedness), present centredness (here and now) and creative adjustment (experiment).
